1.0 Background
A web bug or a web beacon is simply a graphic image on a html page (email or web site) that is designed to transfer information about the user viewing the page. These devices are sometimes called clear gifs, invisible gifs, or 1 by 1 gifs because they are usually a 1 pixel by 1 pixel transparent image (although they don't have to be transparent). The recipient of the information is usually a third party. The usual characteristics of these devices are that they are loaded from a different server than the page you are viewing and their height and width image values are set to 1.
The information transmitted by the web bug is similar to what you would find in a Server Web Log.

Web Bugs (clear gifs) can also be used in emails to determine if a user opens the email.
